"Samba" is a rich and energetic musical tradition rooted in Afro-Brazilian culture. More than just a rhythm, samba is a way of bringing people together through dance, celebration, and vibrant community spirit. It features a wide array of traditional Brazilian percussion instruments, from booming surdos to sharp repiniques, woven together in grooves that are taught by ear and passed down through generations. Samba is alive, joyful, and built for moving your body and lifting your spirit!
Lawrence Community Sambistas invites students ages 16–adult to dive into the infectious energy of samba drumming. You’ll explore powerful rhythms, learn hands-on techniques, and connect with Brazilian culture in a supportive environment. No prior musical experience is necessary. Each weekly session starts with a focus on drumming basics, followed by learning exciting full ensemble arrangements and breaks. The group will join forces with Lawrence University percussion students for at least one high-energy performance per year.
