A child's musical education begins with the melody and rhythm of the parent's voice. It continues with the support of family and school as voice, body, and spirit begin to respond to and create music. Lawrence Community Music School classes foster the development and refinement of general musical ability by providing an environment that is rich in the language of music. The activities learned in class are easily repeated at home, thus nurturing basic skills, strengthening the musical bond between child and caregiver, and building support for the future study of an instrument.

Four class sessions are scheduled during the year: nine-week sessions in the fall and spring and six-week sessions in the winter and summer.

Music for the Very Young

birth–5 years

Form a learning team with your child as you explore rhythm and melody in fun classes that feature age-appropriate songs, games, and activities designed to give experience with basic musical concepts. This hands-on class utilizes traditional, folk, and percussion instruments. Classes are grouped by age and for child and parent/caregiver pairs. No siblings, please.

(minimum 5 students, maximum 8 students)

A mother sits on the floor with her child in her lap. She sings and motions with her hands while the toddler waves handbells.
Two young siblings sit on the floor of an Early Childhood Music class and play a xylophone with mallets.

Sibling Class

1–5 years

This family class encourages siblings to have fun singing, playing instruments, and sharing musical activities. Class is for a parent/caregiver and two children.

(minimum 6 students, maximum 8 students)

Music and Movement

3–5 years

This class provides the opportunity for your child to develop coordination, personal awareness, and self-expression through imaginative movement to music. Children participate independently of their caregivers.

(minimum 5 students, maximum 8 students)

Pre-K children stand together in an early Childhood Music class, smiling and patting their heads with shakers.

Ms. Nell's warmth and kind personality made us feel so comfortable and allowed for so much fun. I do believe that my daughter's recent influx in words is because of this class. Thank you for meeting her where she is at and making every class wonderful!
