Eligibility

Experienced adult piano players, pianists recovering from injury.

Dorothy Taubman recognized that there are quality movements our bodies can make that allow us to interact most optimally with the mechanism of the piano. Her keen understanding of movement and music can allow us to play piano effectively and efficiently, to overcome injury and technical limitation, and to express ourselves freely at our instruments. Lessons are offered in 45-minute, 60-minute, and 90-minute sessions, taught by Anna Reiser.

Testimonials

"Anna is a superb teacher. She presents the principles of the Taubman Approach in a clear, unambiguous way, she answers questions eagerly and without being doctrinaire, and her entire attitude is so positive and encouraging that anyone working with her cannot help but feel optimistic about their progress."

"I have been playing piano since age six, and am now a professional collaborative pianist. I never had any physical playing-related issues until a few years ago, and when elbow tendonitis made it too uncomfortable to continue playing, I was at my wits' end trying to find ways to mitigate it. I read online about the Taubman Approach, but it looked like all the teachers were located far from Appleton. To my absolute delight, I discovered that a Lawrence University student pianist had been doing Taubman work with Anna, and so I connected with Anna right away.

Anna and I have had lessons together on and off for about two and a half years now. While we work on specific piano techniques, we also talk about and work on real-world applications of the Taubman Approach. Focusing on efficient movement in playing, working, and general living has helped my tendonitis enormously. In lessons we work on applying Taubman concepts to music I’m playing for different accompanying projects.

I am so grateful to be back to playing again! It has been - and will continue to be - a journey, but one that is well worth it!"
