“I am a tenured musician with a major US orchestra and have a DMA in clarinet performance. My involvement in these programs gave me a formidable foundation on which to build a career in music performance. […] I cherish the memories and friends I made in both the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble two decades later.”
– Erin Vander Wyst, Lawrence Community Bands alum (4 years)

The Lawrence Community Wind Ensemble provides an environment for advanced woodwind, brass, and percussion players in grades 10-12 to experience masterpieces of wind literature and work toward a goal beyond the accepted norm. Involvement in the program is invaluable for students who desire to continue their musical journey into college, allowing them to stand out as passionate musicians and dedicated members of an honors ensemble. Wind Ensemble also offers students an array of non-musical benefits and life skills, including the development of accountability, patience, confidence, community, and artistry.

Lawrence Community bands rehearse weekly on Monday nights in the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. Two ten-week semesters each culminate with a performance on the stage of the Lawrence Memorial Chapel. Symphonic Band, our non-auditioned band for dedicated young musicians, is an appropriate first step for students who wish to play with Wind Ensemble.

Students registered for Community Music School ensembles are also expected to participate in a curricular (during the school day, for credit) performing musical ensemble when available; Wind Ensemble should not substitute for curricular music programs.

Google Classroom
Lawrence Community Music School youth ensembles utilize Google Classrooms to communicate with students and their families. Registered families will receive an email with an invite link and instructions on how to join and use their choir’s Google Classroom. Families who do not have a Google account can create a free account using an existing email. With parent/guardian permission, the invite link also may be used by the student if they wish to join the Classroom with their own Google account. (Please note that some school accounts block access to Classrooms outside their organization for the students’ safety.)

Wind Ensemble staff will post resources, practice notes, and announcements in the Classroom. Families are responsible for checking their email and Classroom for up-to-date ensemble information.

“I want to become a more well-rounded player, and I love the Lawrence Community bands because we get to play more challenging music with students from other schools. The teacher-conductors keep me coming back each year, and the experience truly makes you a better mucisian.”
– Avianna Akers, Wind Ensemble student
